Adenia fruticosa is a remarkable succulent shrub, 1 to 2 m high, sometimes up to 6 m, ending in several thick, irregularly club-shaped, slightly woody and firm stems. The swollen stems are flask-shaped and smooth, reaching 1 m in height and ending with a few thick whip-like branches. The bluish-green leaves are simple or with 3 or 5 leaflets. The flower is bell-shaped and the crown has fine, dense hairs. The plants are dioecious (sexes on separate plants).
