This member of the Passifloraceae family was described by Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler in 1891. It is found in eastern and southern Africa, growing in well-drained soil with some water and quiet some sun. The flowers are green, and beside seeds, it can be reproduced by cuttings, which might not form the caudex, which on seedlings can grow to 20 centimetres or more. The vines will climb to four meters.
The genera is named after the Yemen city of Aden. The species name means 'spear-formed'.
