Family : Burseraceae
Habitat : Socotra
The Socotra incense tree (Boswellia elongata), one of the seven endemic species found on Socotra, is a medium to large deciduous pachycaule plant, 6 to 8 meters high with various shapes. It is one of the most distinctive plants of Socotra. The long slender leaves are simple when young and become pinnate and feathery with age. The new growth has a complex lace-like texture like a spider web. The color of the leaves varies from gray, to purple, to light green with pale undersides depending on the environment. An incense resin can be collected from Boswellia elongata, the aromatic sap often forms pearls along the trunk, which facilitates harvesting. However, its gum-resin is not as fragrant as Boswellia ameero. It is a very good subject for bonsai lovers.
