Cyphostemma juttae, probably the most common of the genus, is a slow-growing, succulent ornamental tree with several huge swollen bottle-shaped stems or a thick stem bearing a crown of spreading branches. The broad, serrated, blue-green leaves form a strange, compact canopy at the top. Each winter, it completely sheds these succulent leaves, leaving only the swollen stem. The flowers borne in early summer are inconspicuous, but the clusters of grape-shaped fruit are red, then purple and definitely an eye-catcher.
