Tylecodon reticulatus is a robust succulent plant with brown stems and dense and knotty branches. It possesses a characteristic network of "thorns" resulting from the old flowering which grow each year at the end of its branches. These old persistent stems, harden after the fall of the flowers and form a mix of dense, thorny and reticulated protective branches which gives it its name.
This thorny trellis is an additional protection against possible plant-eaters.
